Issue – Shortage of CNC operators.
- CNC Basic Operation & Set up Course – Monarch Industries faced challenges like other Manitoba employers finding experienced CNC operators.
- Solution – They looked to their existing workforce who already displayed strong employability skills and offered upskilling which created stronger career pathways.
- Service provided: Developed an assessment to determine precision math, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and safety. Candidates were then selected for a customized theory and “hands-on” course.
Outcome: This has allowed the company to add an extra shift increasing the utilization of equipment and increasing its production capacity.
“Thomson Training Solutions tailored a highly customized program for us when we were experiencing critical labour shortages with CNC Set-Up Operators. They completed employee assessments and then delivered the training to upskill current employees to meet our staffing needs. Their program has proven to be so successful we have continued to work with them to deliver additional training sessions during a time of unprecedented labour market challenges. ” Trisha Chikousky, Senior Employee and Labour Relations Specialist
Issue: Lack of awareness of the many great careers the electrical industry offers in Manitoba. Of particular urgency was the need to recruit and train counter order sales staff that had to be technically sound, provide great customer service and understand in-house inventory controls.
Solution: TTS met with industry leaders and did a needs assessment.
Service provided: found funding for the program; developed a comprehension course that would teach both the electrical aspect as well as product knowledge and information. The industry was also part of the student selection and hiring process which included a work practicum.
Outcome: A great selection of candidates to choose from.
“We needed the training to qualify people for employment in the distribution and sales area of the electrical sector. TTS ran with the project and took it from concept to conclusion. They also handled all the government liaison work. The graduates were high caliber as was the entire program.” Executive Director, Manitoba Electrical League
Issue – Shortage of Journeyperson’s, and Apprentices
- Interprovincial Red Seal Apprenticeship – Over 700,000 skilled tradespeople are expected to retire by 2028. With this in mind, TTS has been working with communities to provide their youth with the skills that lead to quality jobs in the trades. Young people are among the core beneficiaries of becoming Red Seal Journeyman after taking a 135-hour course after demonstrating to the apprenticeship branch that they have the pre-requisite hours in the trade.
- Employers need more journeymen to employ and train apprentices. Community need opportunities for their youth so they’ll stay in high paying jobs. Strong mentorship is highly valued by both the employer and individual.
- Hydro, CN, Vale, Hudbay, and rural communities have benefited from our trades training. Our customized course assesses individuals’ trade gaps and successfully prepares them to challenge and gain Red Seal status. (Individuals must be able to demonstrate they qualify to challenge the exam).
Solution: We have delivered our training all over the province. 90% of our learners are adult learners over the age of 40 and without any formal theory training.
Our success boils down to our skill gap assessment, motivated and caring instructors, and relatable curriculum. Students are encouraged and enjoy the training which includes, upskilling in reading comprehension, critical thinking, trade math, test-taking strategies, trades theory, and hands-on practical training.
Outcome: Near perfect pass records! These journeymen continue to work in their community providing mentorship to others.
“It has been our experience that Thomson Training Solutions is willing to make that extra effort to ensure the success of our employees who have taken their training. From their course material that is specifically designed to meet the needs of our skilled tradespeople to the additional time spent with trainees, they don’t just work for us, but with us. Our students are engaged on both a personal and professional level and the results have exceeded our expectations” CN Skilled Trades Coordinator
“I would highly recommend taking a Carpenter’s upgrading course with the purpose of obtaining your Red Seal ticket. This course had everything going for it. It was delivered in my community, which made it possible for me to take it. It was extremely well organized. The class size was small and the instructors were really there for me. I would have stayed in school and gotten my grade 12 if I would have had the same caring instructors. I had been out of school for many years and I was worried. I am a good carpenter but never had any formal training. I quit school to work for my father and to help pay the bills. My math was not very good, to begin with, and it was helpful to take time to learn how to study properly. We covered a tremendous amount of material in a very short period of time and I liked how we were tested daily so I always knew where I stood. Ian Landen, graduate student, Red Seal Carpenter

Issue: All electrical workers, including those working with low voltage, are required to be licensed in Manitoba. Most in the field only have vendor-related training and fall short of the scope of knowledge required to pass the exam without the prep course.
Solution: For over 16 years we have offered a thorough prep course across the Province to help technicians/data installers successfully pass the difficult provincial exam.
Outcome: Over 3,000 technicians have passed and gained their M-V license.
“Last year we worked with Thomson Training to have our staff trained for their “M” class electrical licenses. The training was delivered in a timely fashion while working around our staff’s hectic schedules. Thanks to the training we received from Thomson Training, our staff were prepared for the exam and were able to successfully obtain their licenses. ” Cole Watts, Human Resource Manager, Swift Underground

Issue – Shortage of Journeyperson’s, and Apprentices
- Interprovincial Red Seal Apprenticeship – A concern among employers with an aging population is it restricts the number of apprentices that they can hire. For the community, the fear is there won’t be enough opportunities for their youth and they’ll leave the community. Strong mentorship is highly valued.
