Not a lot of people know about this career as it’s very diverse and your job varies depending on where you are working. It could be at an ice rink to a nuclear plant!
A power engineer, also known as a Shift Engineer, Steam Engineer of Stationary Engineer is a diverse occupation with trade like work that can lead to becoming a Chief Power Engineer (Management) earning up to $500,000 annually. In a nutshell the PE operates, monitors and maintains industrial cooling systems, such as compressors, pumps, condensers, and pressure vessels to ensure safe and efficient operation. They conduct daily inspections and perform troubleshooting or minor repairs to prevent equipment failures. They can be found in many different sectors, buildings, chemical plants, pulp and paper, oil and gas, wood, food processing and manufacturing, hospitals, airports, large museums etc.
If you have a mechanical aptitude, are a self-starter and enjoy troubleshooting this may be a career for you. Ranging from the beginner as a 5th class PE to a 1st – this career allows you to work and study while getting paid.
Thomson Training Solutions provides ongoing training to help you pass your levels. These classes are either held at your employer’s facilities (one day a week for 5 weeks) or on Saturdays for five weeks.
